Strength Training Vocabulary

Repetitions or Reps Refers to the amount of times a weight is lifted in one particular exercise.

Sets The number of times the prescribed number of reps (see above) is completed. For example, one set of 12 reps or three sets of eight reps.

Load The resistance used in any exercise. This is normally a weight, like 20 pounds. Free weights (some of you may remember them as dumb bells) usually have the number written on the side of the weight. For instance, Nautilus, Cybex and other weight lifting equipment will show numbers 1-15. The weights are generally found in ten-pound increments. The number five would represent 50 pounds.

Tempo or speed How fast or slow the movement is carried out.

I genuinely believe that beginning with a Personal Trainer is the smartest, quickest, most effective way to get started and continue with a successful program.
