TO STRETCH OR NOT TO STRETCH: That is the Question Question: What is the bottom line on stretching? Do I need to stretch and why? I often see people run into an exercise class late and join the class movement wherever the routine is at, forgetting or not taking the time to stretch. Others, leave class as the cool-down begins. Both circumstances increase the chances for trouble. So does sitting at a computer screen for hours without conscious stretch breaks. Stretching can either serve as part of a warm-up before exercise, a cool-down after it or a release for daily built-up tension. As part of a healthy warm-up, stretching before a workout allows your body (muscles, heart and lungs, specifically) a transition time between rest and activity The amount of time needed to stretch and warm up before an activity is dependent upon the intensity of the workout, the length of time you'll be active, your condition/fitness level and any preexisting injuries or limitations. Pre-activity stretching carries blood to muscle tissue. Warmed-up muscles respond quicker, stronger and with more flexibility The additional flexibility is what helps prevent tears or strain. Here’s a reason you'll like: warmed muscles increase energy production, so your perceived exertion is reduced and your work capacity is increased. After a workout, stretching is important because muscle tissue recovers faster with gentle movement. While there are mixed reviews, the general consensus is that post-workout stretching reduces muscle soreness the day or two afterward. Stretching isn't just for workouts. It is smart for reducing tension and increasing energy Stretching throughout the day at your desk, in the car or in your kitchen is important; it helps relieve body tension by improving oxygen flow to the muscles and the brain. When you stretch, you deliver oxygen to the muscles and give them a wake-up---good enough to give you an energy boost. Stretching doesn't require a lot of time (although, you can opt to do it for hours). It doesn't require expensive equipment, yet provides multiple benefits. One of the most powerful benefits is that you need to slow down to do it. Take pleasure in an activity that refreshes and recharges you in a gentle way To stretch or not to stretch...should no longer be a question. |
